Tara Lanich-LaBrie I grew up in Chicago and began studying to be a naturalist, fascinated by the cellular structure of plants and animals and what they became, spreading into the wider ecosystem. I moved to Santa Fe to pursue a degree in painting and began incorporating what I had observed at the micro and macro levels into my pieces. Circles became an integral form and I began to use them as a map or formula to describe what I was seeing. I dreamt one night that everything was reduced to its fundamental form, the circle. I watched landscapes expanding and contracting in circles, while still maintaining their parameters. My process has evolved to illustrate what I perceive everywhere I look. I cut every circle from a template, and inscribe it with paint, using color to further support the movement of the piece. Landscapes are built up in layers on wood panels I design, conveying movement, creation and destruction, expansion and contraction, and always maintaining both the parts and the whole. |
